Five Key Parameters for Selecting a Vibratory Bowl Feeder

Five parameters that decide a vibratory bowl feeder configuration: part material and size, discharge orientation, takt requirement, incoming condition and installation interface.
A vibratory bowl feeder is custom-built equipment: the same bowl that works perfectly for one part may be useless for another. Aligning the key parameters at the selection stage costs far less than retrofitting after delivery. The following five parameters determine the whole configuration.
1. Part material, size and weight
This is the starting point. Tiny parts (a few millimetres, a few tenths of a gram) suit piezoelectric or low-power electric bowls; medium-sized parts usually pair with 250–500 W electric vibratory feeders; large, heavy parts need a larger bowl diameter and stronger excitation force. Parts that are too light bounce while feeding, parts that are too heavy may fail to climb the track, and material properties (scratch-sensitive or magnetic) further influence track surface treatment and orientation methods.
2. Discharge orientation and orientation difficulty
What attitude the downstream equipment needs — standing, lying flat, which way the head faces — directly determines how complex the track orientation structure must be. The same part with a different discharge attitude may require a completely different track length and screening logic. Always provide part drawings and the downstream picking method at selection; do not accept a proposal based only on "parts come out".
3. Takt requirement
Feeding speed depends on bowl diameter, track length and orientation difficulty, so the higher the takt target, the earlier feasibility must be assessed. The sound approach is to derive the required discharge frequency from the target takt and then verify the orientation success rate — not to build the bowl first and hope it keeps up.
4. Incoming part condition
Oily, magnetised, tangled or burred parts significantly reduce orientation success. The incoming condition must be stated honestly at selection; degreasing, demagnetising or pre-screening may need to be added, otherwise the equipment passes the trial run but jams in volume production.
5. Installation space and line interface
A larger bowl diameter takes more floor space, and room must be left for the linear feeder, hopper and maintenance access. Discharge height and direction must match the downstream equipment (pusher feeder, robot arm, assembly machine), and the control linkage between the feeder controller and the line PLC should be confirmed electrically.
Compile these five items into a selection checklist and send it to your equipment supplier — the accuracy of quotations will differ completely. You are welcome to send 3–5 kg of part samples: within 5 working days we complete a trial run and confirm each parameter in a feeding report.
