Assembly Traceability: What "A Record for Every Product" Really Means

Assembly traceability means recording torque, pressing force and leak rate per part and binding them to the product. Which parameters to record, how to bind data, and how traceability feeds improvement.

"Do you have torque and pressing-force records for every product in this batch?" — questions like this appear on more and more downstream customer audit checklists. Assembly traceability is no longer a privilege of large factories; it is becoming a threshold.

1. What to record

Not every parameter deserves recording. What matters are parameters that "reflect assembly quality and pinpoint problems when they occur": screw torque and angle, the force–displacement curve of pressing, the leak rate of air testing, the number of turns and seat signal of tightening. What these have in common: every unit has its own value, and an abnormal value maps to a specific defect type.

2. How to bind data to the product

The usual practice: assign a code (barcode or QR) to each product before it enters assembly, and each station stores its result linked to that code in a local database or MES. Binding granularity can be per part or per batch — batch binding costs less but carries less weight in customer audits. For safety parts or export products, per-part binding is recommended.

3. Traceability data feeds improvement

The second value of traceability is often missed: classifying NG curves and NG parameters by shape directly identifies the problem station and cause — for example, a sudden rise in floating-screw NGs in one week usually corresponds to an incoming batch change. Without traceability data such problems are guessed from experience; with data, improvement has a target.

4. What the equipment side must provide

To support traceability, assembly equipment needs per-part recording and export capability: storage and query interfaces for torque and force data, barcode read/write linkage, and communication with a host system (MES or local server). Confirm these at equipment selection — retrofitting traceability onto old machines usually costs more than specifying it new.

Our assembly and pressing equipment supports parameter recording, curve storage and barcode binding, with MES integration. Send us your product and traceability requirements and we will help you compile the parameter checklist to record.
