A typical automatic valve assembly line covers feeding, seal assembly, pressing, torque tightening, leak testing and unloading. Process linkage, data logging and layout experience explained.

A valve goes from loose components to finished product through many operations and large quantities — making it the most typical target for assembly automation. A well-planned automatic valve assembly line chains feeding, assembly, testing and unloading into one continuous flow. This article breaks down the layout logic by typical process.

1. The typical process chain

Take a common ball valve or gate valve: bowl feeding of valve bodies → seal / O-ring assembly → cartridge and stem pressing → spring assembly → torque tightening → air-leak testing → unloading of good parts and rejection of NG ones. The number of stations grows or shrinks with the valve structure; a rotary-dial layout suits multi-station continuous assembly, while an inline layout connects more easily with upstream and downstream equipment.

2. Linking the feeding stages

Valve bodies, stems, seals and springs each arrive in a different form: bodies are replenished from a hopper or belt elevator, while stems and seals are oriented by vibratory bowl feeders. Feeding stability decides the takt of the whole line, so the incoming condition of every component (oil, tangling, packaging format) should be mapped out before choosing the feeding method.

3. Where to put the testing station

Air-leak testing usually sits at the end of the chain, but pressure and torque data should be captured at the pressing and tightening stations as well — so that when an NG appears, you can trace which process introduced the deviation, instead of simply discarding the defective part. Traceable data is the core value that distinguishes a valve assembly line from "a machine that tightens screws automatically".

4. Margin to leave in the layout

Three rules of experience: size the station count at current processes plus one or two redundant positions, so later processes do not require a whole new machine; for frequently changed products, prefer recipe-based control where switching products means calling a program; and reserve enough maintenance access and hopper refilling space at the layout stage, otherwise line efficiency will be throttled by refilling.

Send us valve samples and your assembly process requirements: we will produce a whole-line proposal and quotation based on the process chain, and key processes can be verified by a trial run with samples first.
