Automatic Screw Driving Machines

Screw driving is the step where automation most often fails quietly. A screw that goes in cross-threaded, a head that strips, a screw that never arrives - none of these stop the machine, they just produce a product that fails later. An automatic screw driving machine is built around three things: guaranteed screw delivery, controlled torque, and a check that the screw is actually there and seated.

Getting the Screw to the Driver

Two methods dominate. A vibratory bowl or a screw presenter delivers screws to a fixed pick position, and the driver collects them one at a time; this is simple and handles a wide range of screw sizes. Blowing the screw through a tube to the driver is faster and suits short screws, but the tube must be short and the air dry, or screws jam and arrive at the wrong angle. Either way, a sensor confirms each screw arrived.

Torque and Position

The driver is normally servo or clutch-controlled, with the target torque set per product and the result monitored per screw. The positioning system - a gantry or a two-axis table - moves to each screw location in a stored program, so changing product means changing the program and the fixture, not rebuilding the machine.

What the Machine Checks

Screw present, torque reached within a window, screw seated to depth, and no thread stripped. Parts that fail are marked or diverted; the count of failures per shift is the number that tells you whether the machine is actually working.
